A Visit to Uncle Pete’s in Beacon Hill Turns Up Aztec-Inspired Beauties

Before I left town last week I stopped into Uncle Pete’s on Charles Street to use the Living Social coupon that was about to expire. I found a number of cute items — Pete clearly has an excellent eye. Here are some of the pieces I liked best:

Vena Cava dresses with Aztec-inspired prints, a trend I’m loving right now.
I really like the silhouette of these – shift-like, but with simple, feminine ruched details, plus a little sleeve.
I  purchased a gray Viva Vena lightweight tee with an Aztec design on the front.

Awesome skinny denim with heft and stretch from Thvm Atelier.

Pete pulled this out from the back room – Shipley & Halmos top with Native American beading detail at the neck.

This bracelet, by RISD-trained designer Andrea Valentini, is meant to resemble some sort of DNA cluster.
The shop also carries some zipper-like jewelry pieces.

Metalwork feathers on a chain from Bing Bang by Anna Sheffield.

And another.

Swiss Army Knife Maker Victorinox Copley Bound; Fashion Included

Courtesy of Victorinox via WWD
The Boston store will be modeled on the retail shop in Dusseldorf, which opened in January.

The company that makes the must-have Swiss Army knife, Victorinox, has been busy repositioning itself as a sportswear brand for the last year. And now they’re ready to peddle to Boston. The company has signed a lease for 4,200-square-foot flagship at Copley Plaza slated to open in July, WWD reports.

Led for the last 14 months  by president of global fashion and retail, Joachim Beer, who was the former head of Hugo Boss in the U.S., along with a new design team,  the brand has morphed into a full lifestyle collection, with a focus on technical outerwear.

They’ll also be launching a seven-piece capsule collection in the fall designed by British label Raeburn. Named Remade in Switzerland, there will be only 100 pieces total, and will be produced from military surplus fabric, including old sleeping bags, parachute fabric, and Swiss wool blankets. Expect to see them in the new store come September.

Coach Men’s Store Now Open at Copley

Coach Men’s, Copley Place

I stopped by the Coach Men’s shop in Copley yesterday. (I was at J.Crew spending a gift card on summer frocks.) It opened last week (Boston is the second city, after NYC, to get one), and the associates were very excited to have a dedicated men’s space. (Previously they had a small area in the main Coach store on the lower level of the mall.) I couldn’t get photographs in the store, but the interior looks quite nice. Not as “done” as the new J. Crew Men’s store, but very well turned out, complete with a curated picture wall behind the sales counter.

As for the products, I love the array of canvas items, which are displayed on the main table in the center of the store. There are plenty of leather man bags too; they’re just rugged enough for your guy.

Watch Out Intermix, Scoop NYC Is Scouting Boston

Facebook-Scoop NYC

In an exclusive interview with WWD, Scoop NYC president and CEO Susan Davidson said that the company is aggressively moving forward with a number of new store openings in various cities, including Boston. Apparently the company is “close to signing a lease” on Newbury Street.

Very interesting. And about time really. One can’t help but wonder how this will affect sales at Intermix, the only real multi-brand boutique competition (not counting Saks) on the shopping thoroughfare. Though, with its recent amping up of looks and labels, local love The Tannery will go head-to-head with the New York City import. There will likely be some overlap with Dress too, but Jane and Martha keep a much lower profile.

Anyone want to venture a guess as to its targeted location? There are plenty of empty spots. I see it doing something slightly spiffy, between Berkeley and Dartmouth, though it could easily go with a lower rent in a decent space between Fairfield and Gloucester. I suppose it could also join the ranks of Madewell and 344 on the last block of Newbury, though the prices are slightly upscale for that end of the street.

Ugg Australia to Open on Newbury Street

Ugg Australia, Newbury Street, Boston

Was up on the start of Newbury this morning to have tea with local designer Hadley Pollet (more on her new collection to come) at L’Aroma, and noticed that Ugg Australia is coming to town. The boutique is next to DVF; I think it’s the old Brite Smile or Boston MedSpa storefront.

No signage on when it will open yet. Seems they were in town over the holidays back in December, though perhaps that was to sign with hometown poster boy Tom Brady. Makes sense they would open up shop. The company has freestanding stores in eight other major U.S. cities, including Honolulu. Seriously. Bostonians need these toasty, so comfortable they feel like slippers, (even if not at all fashionable anymore) boots more.

It’s Looc’s Last Day; Audra Slashes Prices 60 Percent

Audra Boyle in front of Looc, May 24, 2011

I was running errands for the Boston Globe today in the South End, so of course I popped into Looc. It’s the boutique’s last day in business. I remember meeting Audra and her then partner Shawna almost four years ago, to interview them about their new store (“Je T’aime Paris,” Daily Candy). In a former photography studio, with flea market sourced decor, and a roster of labels mostly unknown to Boston, Looc perfected the sophisticated but easy-to-wear aesthetic of Nantucket by way of St. Tropez.

Today, many well wishers from the neighborhood stopped in to say goodbye. Luckily, Audra was there too (sans bébé). She says she’s not quite sure what’s next, but with her impeccable taste and creativity, we’re certain to be hearing about another venture.

There are still a few pieces left in store, including looks by Rag & Bone, What Comes Around Goes Around, Ulla Jackson, Isabel Marant and under-the-radar jewelry designers.

Bye bye Looc. It’s been cool. ; )
