It’s Looc’s Last Day; Audra Slashes Prices 60 Percent

Audra Boyle in front of Looc, May 24, 2011

I was running errands for the Boston Globe today in the South End, so of course I popped into Looc. It’s the boutique’s last day in business. I remember meeting Audra and her then partner Shawna almost four years ago, to interview them about their new store (“Je T’aime Paris,” Daily Candy). In a former photography studio, with flea market sourced decor, and a roster of labels mostly unknown to Boston, Looc perfected the sophisticated but easy-to-wear aesthetic of Nantucket by way of St. Tropez.

Today, many well wishers from the neighborhood stopped in to say goodbye. Luckily, Audra was there too (sans bébé). She says she’s not quite sure what’s next, but with her impeccable taste and creativity, we’re certain to be hearing about another venture.

There are still a few pieces left in store, including looks by Rag & Bone, What Comes Around Goes Around, Ulla Jackson, Isabel Marant and under-the-radar jewelry designers.

Bye bye Looc. It’s been cool. ; )

SoWa ArtWalk This Weekend

SoWa Art Walk
Sunday, May 15 • 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.

The SoWa Art Walk is this weekend. The studio buildings at 450 Harrison Avenue (and all the others) will be open; you can browse independent artists’ studios as well as the galleries. Many of the neighborhood stores and restaurants will be participating with sales as well. Plus, there’s the SoWa Open Market, SoWa Vintage Market, and SoWa Farmer’s Market.

Here’s a sampling of work I love. I’ve included friends (Robert Knight), much adored artisans (Isabelle Abramson), and new obsessions (Amy Montali).

Walker Contemporary Closes, Takes Show On Road

CLOSED: Walker Contemporary, 450 Harrison Avenue, SoWa

Stephanie Walker has decided to close her SoWa gallery, Walker Contemporary. The gallery closed at the end of April, and Stephanie is heading back to L.A. in the fall.  She’ll stay submerged in the art world, of course, and already has plenty of projects lined up,  including the release of a limited edition fine art print, curating exhibitions in new and unusual locations, and continuing to work with clients.

First up:

“30 Under 30”
Gallery263, 263 Pearl Street, Cambridgeport
Juried by Walker Contemporary’s  Stephanie Walker
Friday, May 20, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.

I still adore the paintings by Elisa Johns, whom Walker represents, that I blogged about two years ago:

Daphne and the Laurel Tree
72 x 48 inches • oil on canvas
