Watch Out Intermix, Scoop NYC Is Scouting Boston

Facebook-Scoop NYC

In an exclusive interview with WWD, Scoop NYC president and CEO Susan Davidson said that the company is aggressively moving forward with a number of new store openings in various cities, including Boston. Apparently the company is “close to signing a lease” on Newbury Street.

Very interesting. And about time really. One can’t help but wonder how this will affect sales at Intermix, the only real multi-brand boutique competition (not counting Saks) on the shopping thoroughfare. Though, with its recent amping up of looks and labels, local love The Tannery will go head-to-head with the New York City import. There will likely be some overlap with Dress too, but Jane and Martha keep a much lower profile.

Anyone want to venture a guess as to its targeted location? There are plenty of empty spots. I see it doing something slightly spiffy, between Berkeley and Dartmouth, though it could easily go with a lower rent in a decent space between Fairfield and Gloucester. I suppose it could also join the ranks of Madewell and 344 on the last block of Newbury, though the prices are slightly upscale for that end of the street.

Sabon Closes; No More Free Soap

Sabon, 129 Newbury Street, Boston

Those of you who have been relying on those colorful slices of free soap that Sabon salespeople incessantly handed out on the street are going to have to find another dealer. This soapy, scrubby spot is closed for business. It’s too bad, though I suppose not surprising. While I like the company’s products, as well as the lovely sink/fountain in the store, I rarely ventured in, instead opting for, well, the free samples that I was handed literally every time I passed.

Is the secret to success no sampling? Lush seems to be persevering, despite the not so pleasant scent that seeps out the store to the sidewalk.

Ugg Australia to Open on Newbury Street

Ugg Australia, Newbury Street, Boston

Was up on the start of Newbury this morning to have tea with local designer Hadley Pollet (more on her new collection to come) at L’Aroma, and noticed that Ugg Australia is coming to town. The boutique is next to DVF; I think it’s the old Brite Smile or Boston MedSpa storefront.

No signage on when it will open yet. Seems they were in town over the holidays back in December, though perhaps that was to sign with hometown poster boy Tom Brady. Makes sense they would open up shop. The company has freestanding stores in eight other major U.S. cities, including Honolulu. Seriously. Bostonians need these toasty, so comfortable they feel like slippers, (even if not at all fashionable anymore) boots more.
