Designer Spotlight: Laura Jean Floral & Design

Last Saturday night I met Laura Jean of Laura Jean Floral and Design, who did the flowers for a dinner series I attended. I can’t believe I hadn’t heard of her before—she is seriously talented, and sweet too. She and jewelry designer Nicole Rueda-Watts, who I met years ago  (check out Nicole’s old loft here) is Laura Jean’s business partner in the shop Observatory in the Observatory Hill neighborhood of Cambridge (next to Nicole’s mom’s furniture shop, Reside). I still need to make a field trip there. In the meantime, if you need a floral designer in the Boston area, for a dinner party, wedding, or any other special event, I highly recommend contacting Laura Jean. (And if you hire her, send me some photos to post!)

Curious George Will No Longer Be Going to Wordsworth

Curious George Goes to Wordsworth, 1 JFK Street, Harvard Square

Curious George Goes to Wordsworth, the wonderful, red-trimmed children’s book and toy store in Harvard Square is closing, Publishers Weekly reported on Friday. Word in the Square is that the shop will shutter by month’s end. This comes just days after Globe Corner Bookstore announced that it will close its bricks-and-mortar bookstore in Harvard Square too. And old time stationer Bob Slate shut its three shops back in March.

The charming shops will definitely be missed. I enjoyed many fun evenings with the kids at the Border Cafe, Lizzy’s Ice Cream, and Curious George. More recently, Bob Slate was a favorite stop after lunch. When the boys saw the windows of the Church Street location papered over, they were absolutely dismayed.

I won’t digress into discussing the merits and downfalls of paper versus computer screens. I love and support both, with more than my share of expenditures at Apple, book stores, Hearst, and Condé Nast, but alas, the world moves on. Bye bye little monkey.

Now you’ll have to go to Target, or worse, CVS, to buy your pens and paper.

Passport Checks Out of Harvard Square, Holds Big Sale

Passport, Harvard Square

If you haven’t heard yet, Passport boutique owner Jessica Good has decided to close up her shop, located in Harvard Square. On Monday she tweeted from @Passportboutiqu:

“After 3 wonderful years in Harvard Square we are closing our doors at the end of May. We will miss all our customers & friends of the store.”

In an email she told me that she decided the store was simply too big, and since her lease is up at the end of the month, she opted not to renew. She’s contemplating a smaller space, possibly this winter. And, she’s having another baby this summer, so she will keep plenty busy.

No exact closing date yet, but the doors will shut by Memorial Day at the latest. In the meantime, everything in the store is 25% off (full price and markdown items).  She says:

“We still have a lot of inventory in the store so I’d love to get the word out to people.  The designers include MZ Wallace, Vince, Rachel Pally, and Three Dots to name a few, as well as luggage, bags, and travel accessories – lots of great items.”
