SoWa ArtWalk This Weekend

SoWa Art Walk
Sunday, May 15 • 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.

The SoWa Art Walk is this weekend. The studio buildings at 450 Harrison Avenue (and all the others) will be open; you can browse independent artists’ studios as well as the galleries. Many of the neighborhood stores and restaurants will be participating with sales as well. Plus, there’s the SoWa Open Market, SoWa Vintage Market, and SoWa Farmer’s Market.

Here’s a sampling of work I love. I’ve included friends (Robert Knight), much adored artisans (Isabelle Abramson), and new obsessions (Amy Montali).

Kickass Cupcakes Truck Burned Out Before Even Beginning

The fire-ravaged Kickass Cupcakes truck.

This was supposed to be the Kickass Cupcakes truck. Seriously. The Davis Square cupcake boutique (er, bakery), custom ordered a tricked out van from which they were planning to sell their sugary treats. One week before the scheduled delivery, the truck found itself involved in a fire. Quite the fire, as you can see. Apparently a rush has been put on the replacement. They expect a shiny, new model by the end of the month.

In the meantime, you’ll have to trek to Davis Square. I actually haven’t tried the cupcakes, but I hear they’re delicious. And I’m picky about my cupcakes (well, about everything I suppose).

Passport Checks Out of Harvard Square, Holds Big Sale

Passport, Harvard Square

If you haven’t heard yet, Passport boutique owner Jessica Good has decided to close up her shop, located in Harvard Square. On Monday she tweeted from @Passportboutiqu:

“After 3 wonderful years in Harvard Square we are closing our doors at the end of May. We will miss all our customers & friends of the store.”

In an email she told me that she decided the store was simply too big, and since her lease is up at the end of the month, she opted not to renew. She’s contemplating a smaller space, possibly this winter. And, she’s having another baby this summer, so she will keep plenty busy.

No exact closing date yet, but the doors will shut by Memorial Day at the latest. In the meantime, everything in the store is 25% off (full price and markdown items).  She says:

“We still have a lot of inventory in the store so I’d love to get the word out to people.  The designers include MZ Wallace, Vince, Rachel Pally, and Three Dots to name a few, as well as luggage, bags, and travel accessories – lots of great items.”

Walker Contemporary Closes, Takes Show On Road

CLOSED: Walker Contemporary, 450 Harrison Avenue, SoWa

Stephanie Walker has decided to close her SoWa gallery, Walker Contemporary. The gallery closed at the end of April, and Stephanie is heading back to L.A. in the fall.  She’ll stay submerged in the art world, of course, and already has plenty of projects lined up,  including the release of a limited edition fine art print, curating exhibitions in new and unusual locations, and continuing to work with clients.

First up:

“30 Under 30”
Gallery263, 263 Pearl Street, Cambridgeport
Juried by Walker Contemporary’s  Stephanie Walker
Friday, May 20, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.

I still adore the paintings by Elisa Johns, whom Walker represents, that I blogged about two years ago:
